Synopsis

In May 2002 over one thousand horses and ponies, their accompanying riders, grooms and supporters were part of an equine extravaganza organised to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This is a personal view of that week related by one rider who was fortunate to perform in this unique occasion. To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of our Queen, Elizabeth II, an extraordinary equine extravaganza was organised. This occasion, called 'All the Queens Horses', was performed at Windsor on the evenings of May 16th, 17th and 18th 2002. It brought together over a thousand horses and ponies, with two thousand riders, grooms and supporters for one memorable week in which the participants rehearsed and performed their set 'Acts' in front of the Royal Family. As well as commemorating a unique event in our lives, that of the 50th year of the reign of our Queen, this event also thrillingly entertained thousands, possibly millions, through the performances and media coverage. The atmosphere of those performances, the excitement of the action and the pageantry captured the hearts of both horse lovers and of those who cannot comprehend the obsession that we have about horses and ponies.

Spectacular as the evening shows were, the greater story was hidden behind the scenes. The event created an environment filled with drama, emotional upheavals and some nerve-wracking moments between riders and their horses. In many cases the 'Acts' had to be learnt in just a few days, the horses and ponies acclimatized to the noise, smells and strange lights of the Stadium in a few hours. Within one week thousands of horses, ponies and humans had to learn, rehearse and perform some amazing feats of horsemanship; it strained relationships and took some to the very edge of their abilities. This is a personal view of that week related by one rider who was fortunate to perform in this unique occasion. It is an amazing revelation through one week in the life of a participant, who had to push herself beyond the point of physical endurance, stretch the relationship between her and her horse to the limit and who, through determination and the love of her equine partner, won through to be a part of this momentous event.
