The British Orthopaedic Association was founded in 1918 and its transformation from an elite club to a representative national organisation mirrors some of the wider social changes taking place during the past seventy-five years. Much of this account is from the minutes of the Association's executive committee and council, but the details can be seen in a broader context. Nevertheless, the aim has been to provide a historical record of the activities of the Association, as recorded by the Association itself, which can be used as a reference source by those who wish to know the background of contemporary events. Interspersed with this are biographies of the first twenty-four presidents (up to 1968). Most of these men were influential in developing orthopaedic surgery and in their different ways provide a more personal comment to be read alongside the bones of the Association's official affairs.
