Synopsis

This is the story, told in superb pictures and fnie historical detail, of six centuries of sail on the rivers Tyne and Wear. The riverside communities, the tradesmen, the shipyards and the regions' famous personalities played extraordinarily important roles in the opening up of the world's trading routes and the expansion of the British Empire. In the early twentieth century the canvas and wood sailing ships died - to be replaced by steam engines and steel hulls. Then the rivers and their industries died. But now the two rivers and the region are undergoing regeneration. The Tall Ships visit to the Tyne in 1993 can be seen as a symbol of change and renewal for both rivers. The mighty tall ships have come back and so has the region.
