A MACHINE KNITTER'S GUIDE TO CREATING FABRICS Susanna Lewis is a fiber artist best known for her wearable art and for her expertise as a machine knitter. Her distinctive work is known around the world; it is exhibited at Julie: Artisans' Gallery in New York, and is represented in the permanent collections of The Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jacquard, Lace, Intarsia, Ripple, More than 350 fabric swatches were knitted and photographed especially for this book, many of them the author's own invention. Complete knitting instructions accompany each swatch. Hundreds of diagrams show cam settings, needle set-ups, and stitch formations. More than 90 graphed designs provide a wealth of ideas for patterned and multi-color knitting. The authors chose several popular knitting machines to knit the examples shown in this book: Brother, Knitking, Singer, Studio, Passap, and Superba. The instructions are cross-referenced for all the machines, and are written generically so the fabrics presented here can be made on any other knitting machine as well. The first chapters include reference material invaluable to any knitter: the functions of various machine accessories and auxiliary carriages, the mechanics of punchcard knitting, a thorough glossary of machine knitting terms, and complete instructions for knitting basic fabrics from which unlimited variations can be designed. The authors spent more than 5 years developing and writing this important book. It would be difficult to imagine a knitted fabric that's not included, but that's exactly the author's intent. This book is meant to be just a starting point, a complete sourcebook that enables knitters to begin creating original and distinctive fabrics.
