Michael Yarrow found motivation to produce this book when a close friend was crippled in an accident. It lists more than 1000 places in Britain to visit on a day out, with precise details of their suitability for people with disabilities - the elderly, and those in wheelchairs or with babies in pushchairs - as well as particulars of the venue. The most significant part of each entry is geared to helping people with special needs assess whether the place is suitable to visit. Symbols show where there are steps or narrow doorways, the type of toilet provision, levels not accessible to wheelchairs, how bumpy or steep the terrain is, seating availability, special routes or braille facilities, sympathetic hearing schemes, baby-changing facilities, and the availability of wheelchairs, batricars or helpers. The symbols are translated into English, French and German. The book is supported by The National Trust, Age Concern, Mencap, Radar, PHAB and SOS, all of whom receive donations from its sales.
