Synopsis

The British School (covering English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh artists) represents the largest national section in the collection of the Witt Library of the Courtauld Institute of Art. The Witt Library contains some 300,000 photographs and other illustrations of British paintings, drawinsg and engravings from the Middle Ages to the present day. This work provides names, variant names, life dates, locations of birth and death, professional association and an indication of the size of the library's holdings for some 14,000 British artists who are represented in the library. Owing to the strength of the Witt Library's holdings of many minor and very minor artists, unique information is provided for many artists who cannot even be traced in a wide range of other reference dictionaries. This book has been compiled from the Witt Computer Index, using the authority file structure of a relational database that currently also contains a full catalogue raisonne entry and subject classification for all works of American art held by the Witt Library (more than 55,000), a growing selection of similiar full records for British 18th-century art (currently 20,000), and checklist entries for all artist's names in the American, Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand schools. The Witt Computer Index is a collaborative project of the Witt Library and the Getty Art History Information Program (AHIP) which has supported the publication of this volume.
