Synopsis

This is a unique story dramatic, compelling and with far-reaching repercussions. Against a background of court intrigues and political machinations, seventeenth-century Europe was beset by war. At the centre of the major upheaval of the final decade was a triumvirate of powerful kings: William III, James II and Louis XIV. At the battle of the Boyne in 1690, William and his father-in-law James (backed by Louis) went head-to-head in a fight for the crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland. Historically, this was a crucial battle for Ireland and for Europe; socially, its repercussions are still being felt in Ireland; militarily, it provides a fascinating account of the reality of war for soldiers in the late seventeenth century. This guide to the battlefield by an acknowledged expert on the battle of the Boyne describes the political manoeuvrings that led to the battle, its relationship to the landscape, the course of the fighting, the tactics employed by both sides, army organisation, weapons and uniforms and the aftermath. Using maps, portraits, illustrations and aerial photographs to plot the course of the events, it is the definitive story of the battle that changed history. The book includes an audio CD which takes the listener on a tour of the battlefield at the Boyne, bringing you to the best viewing points and recreating the battle through sounds and words. The Book is published in anticipation of the opening of the new interpretive centre at the battle of the Boyne site at Oldbridge.
