values are the main influence determining our behaviour
we are social beings and in any cultural group there are specific parameters on individual behaviour necessary to establish the essential degree of trust vital for the group to thrive. These parameters are the currently generally accepted code of conduct backed up by an enforceable law and each individual then interprets the application of the code and the law using his or her personal values to allow for the specific circumstances facing them.
Such personal values can be regarded as 'habits of thinking' caught from the adults (usually their parents) who provided the essential sustenance and protection for them to survive to maturity modified by their education, their interaction with their peers and their experiences. Such values are 'caught' rather than 'taught' and, while the majority find it readily straightforward to 'catch' the values commonly acceptable in their particular cultural group there are some (such as those suffering from Autism or Aspergers Syndrome)who, usually for genetic reasons, find this very difficult if not impossible.
Since no-one has been able to provide a rational explanation for the existence of the Universe (nor of the presence of conscious life on the Earth) every individual must make a conscious, or unconscious, decision on how to live their lives. A sensible objective would seem to be to aim at a full life but at the same time being conscious of the interests, needs and values of others. Tolerance of others' views would seem to be a prime factor in ensuring a satisfactory life style but even tolerance must be limited since no group could survive if it allowed the activities of the completely anti-social individuals such as the multiple murders to have free play.
