Synopsis

This is a most beautiful book which relates to views and events which took place some one hundred and twenty years ago. It is one of those books which has long been around in my family - you know, one of those books that you possibly take for granted. It wasn't until this year that after having another look at the book I decided to make a similar journey from the source of the Thames to my home in Twickenham. The original aim of the journey was to relate old and new in the form of a children's project guide; however, soon after starting down the river the journey became somewhat of a mystery tour with each turn of the river revealing one of the book's engravings. I took the opportunity to photograph these views as closely as possible to the engraving. This, together with the beautiful text which was easily absorbed en route, provided a wonderful holiday, which was indeed the wish of the authors many years ago. In reprinting the original I hope that I am fulfilling the original ideas of the authors in allowing a larger audience to enjoy the pleasures of the River Thames, as depicted in this splendid book. - R.A.Harris, London, 1975
