Synopsis

This is an explanation of printing and its associated technologies designed for the layman rather than the professional printer. Many individuals in occupations such as graphic design, publishing and advertising, require a basic knowledge of printing processes, and this book addresses that need. It aims to take a clear and technically uncluttered approach to the subject, covering the principles of the main printing processes from techniques of origination, through the materials and machines used, to the binding and finishing of printed product. It is designed for the newcomer to the subject and assumes no previous knowledge. Pictures and diagrams are used extensively to supplement descriptions of machines and processes and clarity of explanation is given top priority. Essential technical terms are described in the text but those which are not immediately necessary to the reader's understanding are consigned to the glossary. Obsolescent processes such as letterpress have been explained briefly - but in their historical and derivative context rather than in the pretence that they are still in widespread use - and this book concentrates on contemporary methods at every stage, including desktop publishing and electronic reproduction. Useful appendices include sections on standard sizes and measurements used in the industry, proof correction marks, and a further reading list. A collection of samples of commonly used papers is bound into the book and a glossary describes many of the industry's technical terms. This book should be of interest to printers, book and magazine publishing production staff, publishing non-production staff in need of basic print knowledge, newspaper trainees, advertising agents' production staff, corporate in-house printers, printing colleges, colleges of art and design and graphic designers.
