Synopsis
This is the first English language book to be written about a four day naval battle between a large English fleet and a larger Dutch fleet which took place off the mouth of the Thames in June 1666. The outnumbered English eventually abandoned the battle, to conclude what has been called the greatest engagement fought on the seas on all the age of sail. This tremendous encounter has long fascinated naval specialists and this book has been described as a tour de force of scholarship and the definitive account. There are numerous illustrations, many of which had not previously been published.
