Grapevine Hollow is not the sort of place to run out of petrol in broad daylight, let alone the middle of the night, but New York photographer Susan Lipper has spent a large part of the past five years living cheek-by-jowl with its hillbilly inhabitants and taking the photographs shown in this book. Grapevine is a small community of trailer homes in the heart of the coal mining region of West Virginia, and its hundred or so residents are directly descended from just four or five families who settled there in the early 1900s. They are a formidable, fiercely close-knit group which has little contact with - and even less respect for - the outside world. However, their lives are far from harmonious, as the photographs present. Accompanying the photographs are a series of interviews. Susan Lipper has a Master's degree in Photography from Yale University. Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in a number of permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the National Portrait Gallery, London.

"In Lipper's photographs the gap between the photographer and those photographed is narrow. She has not fetishized a remote American sub-culture especially hard-hit by social neglect but rather unearthed the instinctual drives of eros/thanatos, instincts that defy class or privilege and which preserve, destroy and passionately connect all human beings."
