Many basic questions beset all inexperienced programme makers. He can have ideas in plenty - and be very good at talking about them - but until he starts on the hard work of actually making a programme he doesn't really know if he has the ability (or the capacity for attention to detail or the stamina) that is necessary to carry through a professional production. This manual is one television producer's view of how to approach the making of informational or documentary programmes from first idea to the time of screening. It sets out to provide not so much a series of rules as a primer of basic approaches and deals with all the principal processes involved in the making of a documentary: sources of ideas, treatments, research, scripting, recces, shooting and editing are discussed simply and factually. Also included are specimen examples of a documentary treatment, a shot list and an assembly order. Although primarily written with single camera work in mind, the manual is also relevant to those starting work on studio-based productions.
