Synopsis

Joan David was a retired scientist living in Cumbria. She saw a painting by Percy Kelly in a friend's house December 1982. She wrote to Kelly where he was living in exile in rural norfolk asking to buy a painting. She didn't get a painting but a wonderful painted letter in a beautifully illustrated envelope. He signed his 3rd letter Roberta and a few weeks later wrote in anguish because his wife had left him. This was the beginning of 10 years of beautiful letters some 30 pages long telling of his difficulties, loneliness. problems and retentiveness about his work. He writes about his past life; his childhood, time in the army, the breakdown of his first marriage, his running away with a surgeons wife, his unhappy 7 years in Wales and his final move to rural Norfolk and his change of name to Roberta Penelope. Joan supported and sustained him for 10 years until his death in 1993. During that time she only met him 5 times but she received thousands of letters - each of them a painting with words superimposed. These are selected and illustrated in this lovely book.

1st edn. Hardback in d/w. 135pp. Illustrated throughout in colour & b/w, both full page and within text. Green cloth boards with gilt titles to spine. Boards clean, bright, square and sharp. Internally clean, bright and tight, SIGNED by Chris Wadsworth to title page, A FINE otherwise uninscribed copy. In nr FINE unclipped d/w.This is an extraordinary story of an unlikely friendship between Percy Kelly, an artist who was originally a postal worker in West Cumbria and ]oan David, a retired scientist and art collector. lt is told through a unique series of illustrated letters which were sent over a period of ten years. Though Percy and Joan only met five times during that period, these letters follow the hopes and concerns of a talented artist with many problems which were often self-inflicted. The letters are full of vivid memories which give insight into life in the twenties as part of a large working-class family, through the war years in active service and a quest for further education as a mature student. They follow his progress as a working artist who is able to socialise with nobility but is unable to sustain relationships. This is a lavishly illustrated book in which we can imagine and share the delight with which these letters were received along with the decorated envelopes and enclosures of little paintings, drawings, puzzles and sketches. The landscape, seasons, weather, animal and plant life are keenly observed in detail through the eyes of a very sensitive artist. We are privileged to be invited to share these wondrous things.
