Synopsis

Winifred Spencer was born in 1899, the daughter of a cowman and his wife and one of 13 children. The family lived at the Coombe Bake, in the heart of Salisbury Plain. Sylvia Marlow presents the story of Winifred's early life in her subject's own words. The reader learns of a resourceful mother who raised her many children with a severity she felt was necessary to prepare them for the dangers of a harsh world. Unlike her sisters, Winifred was unwilling to be tied down by circumstances and refused to let current hardships to blind her to the infinite possibilities in life. At the time of publication she was in her 95th year and continuing to confront life with great spirit. Unsentimental and honest, this is her story.
