Title: Colliers' Way
The last pit in the Somerset Coalfield closed in 1973. This event marked the final chapter in a story which dates back to medieval times and possibly even to the Roman era.
Colliers' Way is the first book on the subject for some 15 years. In this time a great deal has changed; colliery buildings have been demolished or converted into other uses, waste tips have been flattened and grassed over, whilst canals and railway lines had already largely vanished.
Peter Collier has been acquainted with the coalfield all his life. In recent years, as his interest grew, he set about walking the maze of footpaths in the area. Twelve circular walks of moderate length are described which, with the aid of clear sketch-maps, will provide others with an inside view of this fascinating area - a small slice of industrial Britain curiously rooted in Somerset's green countryside.
By way of introduction, the author presents a succinct but enlightening account of the geology and history of the coalfield. In addition, interviews with five ex-miners whom he met on his rambles offer a vital link with a fading past.
