Synopsis
This dictionary has a total wordlist of about 12,000 main words, and subsidiary words and expressions derived from them. All the words and expressions are defined in simple terms, and examples are given of how each word is used in context. The vocabulary covers a wide range of medical and paramedical terminology, including parts of the body, diseases and disorders, operations, treatments, hospitals and nursing care and the NHS. Differences between British and American usage are highlighted. The definitions are given in simple English, using only about 500 words in addition to the words already listed in the dictionary. This makes it useful for laymen or for students whose first language is not English. Short grammatical notes cover tricky constructions, irregular verb forms and differences in spelling and construction between British and American English. Throughout the text encyclopaedic comments are given to expand on the definitions. These cover various aspects of anatomy and diseases. Short quotations are given from medical magazines to show that the words are used in "real life" contexts.
