Synopsis

In June 1991, 'June 4th China Support' organized an international conference on human rights in China, 'Rights in China: What Happens Next?' The conference was held in London over two days and attracted over 120 participants from Britain, Europe, the former Soviet Union and the USA. The conference was divided into four main sessions: The Concept of Rights; Censorship; China and Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union; and China's International Role. There were also a number of seminars on various topics such as nationality issues and trade unions. The paper presented by Jean-Pierre Cabestan in the final session has already been published in Lydie Koch-Miramond et al's 'La Chine et les droits de l'homme (L'Harmattan, Paris 1991, pp. 80-96) and Ewa Brantley, the other speaker in this session was unable to prepare her paper due to illness.
