From the Author

Neworks dominate at the expense of truly local stations
It's interesting to see how the local radio environment in Europe has changed, and how, despite the regulatory efforts of some countries, the process of turning local stations into network components seems inexorable. This is as true in the UK as it is in France, Australia or the USA. It may well be that the real future of 'local' radio is something much closer to the RSL (restricted service licence) format in the UK where a group of people can go on the air with minimum power and trivial cost for a month or so. Our book remains of interest to the media student as a snapshot odf where policy stood twelve or thirteen years ago. But it's time to look again at this topic...
