Synopsis

Stan Abbott and Alan Whitehouse tell the story behind the successful six-year battle to save the spectacular railway from Settle to Carlisle - the line British Rail itself dubbed "England's greatest historic scenic route" and then set about closing. The victory was a historic one; for the first time a campaign by pressure groupts and local authorities had scored a victory against the dogmatic reign which saw the coining of the term "Thatcherism". The two years since the publication of the first edition of this book have seen the departure of Mrs Thatcher, but, as the authors argue, still no change in the entrenched attitudes in government and civil service which have determined the fortunes of railways in Britain.
