Charles Johnson was born in Birmingham 1942. He worked as a librarian in Redditch from 1966 to 2001. He contributes to the British Midlands poetry scene with workshops, readings and two publishing ventures: Flarestack Publishing and the magazine Obsessed with Pipework . His poems have appeared in a wide range of journals and anthologies.
The long-awaited gathering of poems which have been scattered casually around the world during the last twelve years by their author: the editor and former librarian who has been too busy promoting and publishing the work of others in the award-winning Flarestack booklets (over 60 so far) and in his poetry quarterly Obsessed with Pipework.
These poems are simple, reverend and warm-hearted; but, like all the best poems, they are not afraid of asking awkward questions. Selima Hill
What is poetry made of? Holidays, heart surgery and a whacking great leafgreen grasshopper.
Where does it come from? Not, like the camellia, from a country without cabbages, but from the Midlands, middle England, land of ordinary and everyday. A known world, sure, but one that weirdly lets you down into an underworld of indices, where heron is held in the form of feather-list, or lets you rise in flights of fantasy, Elijah-like, your horses become horses of heaven.
What holds it together? Not cobwebs and honey but a humour that is rueful, ripe and full of years.
Here s poetry worth waiting for. Gillian Allnutt
There is a great story in the book which pulled me through it.
Jennifer Compton
For myself, entertained, significantly puzzled and instructed as I have been for many years by Charles s writing, I have wanted these poems in one place . . . Some have appeared in anthologies, some in magazines, many have been buried under the piles of other people s poems, poems Charles has been generously publishing both in the magazine, Obsessed With Pipework, and in individual collections. from the Introduction by David Hart
