"It is not my ambition to be considered an historian nor a novelist, but as my profession brings me in close contact with books of all kinds, those dealing with the fateful years of 1914-1918 naturally have claimed my attention. I think that I have read the majority and enjoyed most of them, but I noticed that few, if any, of the writers had seen the war from a machine gunners point of view, and I bethought me of my diary which I have been fortunate enough to retain. ...if the book can give similar interest to those who know the sectors of which I have written then it has not failed in its purpose."
