QUARTZ CRYSTAL WASHING
My next anodyne is a quartz lump. / 'Keep your crystal in silk. Purify / and programme it. Bond with it lovingly.'
Sunshine packages test my nerves: a chance, / though, to energise this splinter of living rock, / to wash off other neurotics and clammy palms.
'Rose quartz is calming, makes you want your NOW.' / Mine is shot through with frosted sprays. / The sea's edge stinks so I take my rituals
to waves slapping the end of a jetty, wash / the hot chunk, and as I hold it up to sparkle / something spins it plopping down a cleft.
I kneel on whelks, poke head and sunglasses / into weed and slime, willing it to churn back, / glint; feel down until my arm runs out
and things squirm away. I feel small / and stupidly near to tears. There are no / second chances in the sea. The next wave
soaks me from head to crutch. Then children / come, leaping from rock to rock with nets / to trap whatever tries to escape.
