The Submarine Scimitar naval fighter and strike aircraft entered Royal Navy service in August 1957 with 700X Flight-the Intensive Flying Trials Unit Flying Trials Unit (IFTU)-RNAS Ford, near Arundel in Sussex. This unit was in existence for approximately nine months, carrying out the vital service evaluation and rectification work, and the first front line unit, 803 Naval Air Squadron, was formed on June 1958 at RNAS Lossiemouth, Scotland. Further squadrons-800, 804 and 807-were commissioned shortly thereafter, all based out of Lossiemouth. The last squadron to disband would he 803 NAS, on 1 October 1966: first in, last out! The aircraft was, for a naval fighter at that time, big and very heavy. It was fitted with two powerful Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets and, unusually, these were not equipped with reheat (afterburner augmentation). Although the Scimitar could quite readily go supersonic in a dive, it could not achieve this while flying straight and level.
