Synopsis

The Cockpit Book is a collection of nautical titbits collected over a period of thirty-five years by the author. The original cockpit book was a 1950 desk diary which became the 'autograph book' on a succession of yachts, to be read and enjoyed in the cockpit with a drink in the hand. This book's appeal goes far wider than the yachting world. Contents include a nautical pot pourri, superstitions, rhymes and limericks, even food and drink recipes especially suitable for consuming aboard. It was written primarily to amuse and that was the main object of the original cockpit book too. The author's first experience of sailing dates back to the late forties when he crewed on a ketch in the Clyde estuary, cruising up to the Scottish western isles. The absence of yachting books led to the recording of data in an old exercise book which soon gave way to a 1950 diary to contain the nautical trivia. Norman Boyd has written many freelance articles on a variety of subjects, but a nautical flavour predominates. He is the author of The Discovery of Ship Models. He skippers the family Moody 40, moored on the River Blackwater. All on board Leo d'Or take a keen interest in the standards of victuals on board, which explains the Food and Drink section. The Rhymes and Laughs chapter is a reflection of his own salty sense of humour, carrying on a seafaring tradition for mild ribaldry. It proved a heart-breaking task to have to select from so much material contained in the original cockpit book.
