Through her music, her teaching, and her writings, Julia Werntz, PhD, has become recognized as a leading voice in the field of microtonal music. Her compositions have been performed at concert series, festivals, and venues around Europe and the United States. At the New England Conservatory of Music and Berklee College of Music she teaches courses in microtonal ear training and composition, analysis of microtonal music, and other subjects. Werntz has published several articles about microtonal music and other topics in contemporary music. As Artistic Director of the Boston Microtonal Society since the mid-1990s, she had produced numerous concerts, performed, lectured, and hosted colloquia and workshops with microtonal composers and performers from around the world.
