Synopsis

The objective of the November 1993 symposium, which was part of the PAC RIM Meeting, was to present current research on a range of different silicon-based materials, primarily silicon carbide and silicon nitride. The papers in this proceedings volume represent some of the most recent developments in the processing and mechanical behavior of both monolithic and composite materials. Research on a wide variety of net-shape approaches is presented, while recent advances in the mechanical behavior of composites and self-reinforced materials are also covered in depth. Synopsis

After decades of research, materials such as Si3N4 are beginning to realize their potential for various structural applications. The papers collected in this volume represent some of the most recent developments in the processing and mechanical behavior of both monolithic and composite materials. Net-shape processing routes are becoming increasingly important, particularly for composites, and research on a wide variety of net-shape approaches is presented here. Recent advances in the mechanical behavior of composites and self-reinforced materials are also covered in depth. The papers contained in this volume were presented at the symposium on Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics, which was part of the PAC RIM Meeting that was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 7-10,1993. Section 1: Applications and Synthesis of Silicon Nitride Section 2: Processing of Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics Section 3: Mechanical Behavior of Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics Section 4: Oxidation and Corrosion of Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics.
