Helping the Hurting
Hello! I am honored to be able to meet you. The book, How to Help Hurting People is a gift that came to me from God. I wanted to develop a resource that could be used to train lay people who are in leadership roles in local churches, and who are approached by people who are hurting. It is a book for those who want to help, and who want to know when they should refer the person to professional counseling.

It resulted from a survey of African American counselors, pastors, psychologists and social workers. I asked them to identify the twelve most commonly encountered emotional crises of African Americans who come to them for help. I then identified the most frequently named 12 emotions, and contacted twelve African American counselors, pastors, etc., to author the chapters. One chapter is devoted to each of the twelve emotions. The introductory chapter, "The Power that Comes from Pain" is contributed by Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Each chapter contains a case study, a biblical personality who experiences the same emotion, guidelines from the counseling professional, and a related Bible study. A related leader guide contains discussion/lesson plans for each chapter, discussion questions, and answers to the Bible study questions.
