About the Author
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1824) was the drafter of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States.
Merrill D. Peterson (1921-2009) was professor of history at the University of Virginia and the author of Thomas Jefferson and the New Nation: A Biography, The Jefferson Image in the American Mind, and Lincoln in American Memory.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Ex-library book in an unclipped dust jacket. Stickers to back endpapers only. No textual markings or annotations. Text block edges rather dusted, library stamp to top edge. The dust jacket remains clean and complete, light local shelf wear only (notably to the spine ends), with a library reference sticker to the spine bottom. Blue cloth with fine gilt titling to the spine. The boards remain clean and sound, save for a little adhesive-tape residue to the four edges, presumably from a plastic library cover. There is some play in the rear hinge, but the boards remain secure, and the binding tight. A serviceable study copy, shelf-aged, but with a clean text throughout. Edited and with Notes by Merrill D. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 12th Printing. Journals, correspondence, and other papers from one of Early America's greatest minds. Blue cloth boards; sewn-in bookmark ribbon, quality paper, all the usual bells and whistles you expect from a Library of America edition. A very faint rubbing along spine head; (publisher applied?) bookplate on front-free endpaper identifies this copy as "one of 50 provided by the Millennium Project for Public Libraries" in 2001, so this one somehow escaped as there are no other ex-libris indications. [Full disclosure: working at a library in 2001, I wrote a grant for the Millennium Project, and do not remember having to apply 50 bookplates to all the titles received.] Book is straight, sound, and has a clean interior.
