The subject of this ingenious package is similar to that of Magnification (see above), but the approach here is hands-on, with a 5x lens included with the book. Using humorous language and oddball perspectives, expressing child-like curiosity, Ross explains how to operate a hand lens and thus enter a 3miniature realm, [where] a pebble can look like the moon.2 Nearly 60 different lessons lead to eye-popping observations: bird feathers are zippers, dragonfly wings are stained glass windows, wild seeds are shaped like kayaks (he explains why), a dustball contains elements of other galaxies. Humans tapping maple trees seem mundane compared with amazing aphids stealing sap from plants. Len-wielding sleuths will appreciate activity suggestions, for example, read the 3secret messages2 for bees inside flowers, goggle at slime and mucous, examine the rings of a worm's body, inspect pollen pillows and flower condominiums. Ross ably balances fun facts with probing questions. Of interest to science lovers as well as those who snooze through textbook science, this book is a source of entertainment and reference that could keep some enthusiasts busy for years. Its sturdy construction ensures a long, durable life. Ages 7-up. Publishers Weekly/ May 17, 1993
The World of Small is a neat package consisting of a spiral-bound book that tells youngsters about little things worth looking at closely and a five-power compact hand lens enabling them to do so. Michael Elsohn Ross provides simple text suggesting all sorts of interesting and even startling sights to be found when a child looks through the lens at his or her own skin, or a hair, or a drop of water-- to say nothing of insects, plants, flowers, and even a category labeled 3Slime and Yucky Things.2 The are even a few pages on the history of lenses themselves. Parade Magazine/ December 26,1993
Even parents will find this an appealing title, which encourages all ages to wonder at close-up investigations of hair, flowers, seeds, and other objects from nature. Midwest Book Review
