XX [From the preface] "During 1981 to 1982, while spending the year in Northern California, I began a research project based on the 1902 Gustavus Eisen collection of Guatemalan textiles housed at the Lowie Museum of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley. 17 male tzutes, or headdresses, from Chichicastenango were the focus of this research, five of which were collected on the Eisen expedition. Subsequently I have analyzed over 85 male tzutes from Chichicastenango housed in museums and private collections. By tracing a single aspect of textile design in the tzutes, the image of the double headed eagle, over a time span of 83 years, one can view the transformation of this motif from a naturalistic form, endowed with ritual meaning, to an abstract form, reflecting external and internal influences on the traditional Maya Indian weavers of Chichicastenango.".
