This beginning sewing kit revives an appreciation for the art of hand sewing while developing children's motor skills.
My First Sewing Book is the first step for learning to sew.
Knowing how to sew is a result of practicing to learn a skill. My First Sewing Book is the first level in a proven sewing program I have been teaching as in school curriculum and for after school classes since 1974 in Marin County, California. Children learn step by step how to thread a needle, make a knot, over stitch following DOTS TO SHOW WHERE STITCHES GO, lock stitch and stuff a felt shape or animal. After completing the two felt bird shapes that come with the book, the child can choose another shape to make from paper patterns. As a teacher I prepare felt shapes by cutting them out and making DOTS. Children have made zoos, a collection of dinosaurs and mobiles of clouds, moon and stars. They also enjoy stitching valentine hearts and holiday decorations. Before moving on to the second level, My First Embroidery Book, allow time for a child to practice to master skills. Learning too fast is not fun. Children enjoy using their sewing skills to make things for themselves as well as gifts for family and friends. I have also written a teacher's manual and made a video to encourage parents, teachers and teenagers to learn to earn money teaching children to sew.
