Leonard Doohan is widely-known as an author and lecturer in biblical theology, spirituality, and the role of the laity in the church. Here, for the first time, he gathers together material presented over many years in his workshops on John of the Cross. The Contemporary Challenge of John of the Cross offers a clear and simple introduction to the life, writings, and message of the Mystical Doctor, stressing always the practical applications of his teaching and example for today's Christians. 'This excellent work,' writes Ernest Larkin, O.Carm., 'opens the treasures of John of the Cross for our contemporaries.'

About the book >.>.> While in the last stages of writing this book, my family and I were invited to Spain. Although I had traveled throughout north- ern Spain and visited Segovia and Avila on various occasions, I had never before been to southern Spain. I planned a personal pilgrim- age to several of the places associated with John of the Cross. My wife and I first passed through M?laga where John had founded a house of the reform in 1585, and on to Granada where we arrived early in the morning. After a cup of coffee, we visited the convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns in the center of the city, just a couple of minutes from the great Cathedral and Royal Chapel of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. Mother Superior and two sisters received us with much kindness, giving me lots of time to ask about places and events in Granada connected with John's stay there from 1582 to 1588. The sisters showed us relics of John, a walk- ing stick he used in his frequent trips from his monastery of Los M?rtires to the c. Seller Inventory # Batch-FM373-VG-8873
