Born in 1907. Halldis Moren Vesaas is a leading woman of Norwegian letters. Her work includes twelve volumes of poetry, an autobiography, and translations. This volume marks her first appearance in English and contains over five decades of work starting with her first book. 'Harp and Dagger', which originally appeared in 1929. Her poems take their start from a sense of hope against all odds and a sense of admiratiuon and sympathy for those who resist and suffer. Much of her poetry resonate the work of her poetic mentor, Scandinavian poet Edith Sodergran, in its praise of 'the triumph of existing'.
