A book about government and politics in countries with differing systems with a chapter on the problems of establishing viable political systems in the less well developed countries. Chapter 1 deals with Britain and the United States - homogeneous political cultures but somewhat differing systems of democratic government - with a brief look at Canada. Chapter 2 takes a comparative look at France and Germany - often referred to as having fragmented political cultures - as examples of continental parliamentary democracies. Chapter 3 deals with the best known communist systems: the Soviet Union and the Chinese and Yugoslavian variations. Chapter 4 examines the political system of Japan, a non-Western developed nation embarked upon a new experiment in democracy. Chapter 5 considers the political systems of the developing (or Third World) nations and Chapter 6 treats Mexico: a developing political system that is unique in many ways. Unlike most Third World states Mexico exemplifies political stability and essentially a one part system - it possesses quasi-democratic and quasi-authoritarian attributes. The choice of political systems is at once broad and representative.
Several chapters each treat more than one political system and the result is a genuinely comparative presentation. The book constitutes: a general introduction to comparative politics, an introductory approach to politics or the study of political science generally."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
