About the Author

Herbert Maynor Sutherland was born in Dickenson County, Virginia, on October 29, 1893. After graduating from Concord College, he worked in and around lumber camps, where he acquired the nickname "Joy." Some time after serving overseas in World War I, he worked for the New York Times. Due to his health, he returned to Dickenson County, where, in 1939, he acquired the county weekly newspaper and named it The Dickensonian. He retired in 1963 and died on April 22, 1967.
