An update on the status of the Hatley/Pirbhai Methods
In this book the late Imtiaz Pirbhai and I introduced our System Architecture and Requirements Methods, which have become gratifyingly popular and widely used throughout industry. There are now several automated tools that provide comprehensive support for the methods.
Later this year a new, much more comprehensive and updated book on Systems, System Development, and the Methods will be available. Co-authored by Peter Hruschka and myself, the tentative title of this new book is System Development - A Practical Guide; it too will be published by Dorset House.
A casebook and practical reference for modeling the requirements and architecture of real-time and general systems, this comprehensive text provides a much-needed guide for the system developer. Large software-based systems, especially those for real-time applications, require multi-mode operation, direct interaction with a rapidly changing physical environment, and fast response times. In the past, the development of such systems was prone to massive cost and schedule over-runs, and to inadequate performance and reliability: the techniques presented in Strategies for Real-Time System Specification integrate a finite-state machine structure into the classical structured analysis methods, and were developed in response to a need to correct these problems. The book contains nearly 200 diagrams, many of which illustrate the techniques used in the requirements specification of a flight management computer system designed for a major avionics developer.
