Synopsis
Robert Silverberg's enduring classic about one man's journey to find salvation for a planet on the brink of destruction "Roum is a city built on seven hills. They say it was a capital of man in one of the earlier cycles. I knew nothing of that, for my guild was Watching, not Remembering." For a thousand years, mankind has lived under the threat of invasion from an alien race. About the Author
Robert Silverberg is one of science fiction's most beloved writers, and the author of such contemporary classics as Dying Inside, Downward to the Earth, and Lord Valentine's Castle. He is a past president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and the winner of five Nebula Awards and five Hugo Awards. In 2004 the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America presented him with the Grand Master Award. Silverberg is one of twenty-nine writers to have received that distinction.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Rome untold eons in the far future, this is the story of three survivors: a world-weary Watcher, a fearsome scaly-skinned Changeling, and a beautiful delicately winged Flier. We meet these three on the eve of a terrible invasion.an invasion one of them foretold.and an invasion one of them secretly led. It is the Watcher's calling to scan the heavens four times a day looking for an invading alien fleet which has been foretold. His traveling companion on his way to Roum is a young girl whose wings can't withstand the light of day, hence the title of the story. The Changeling is in love with the girl, and when she gives her body to the prince of Roum in exchange for lodging, he angrily proclaims that he will gouge out the prince's eyes. He reveals to the Watcher that he is an alien spy for the fleet that is approaching in a mere matter of hours. The Watcher activates his machine and sends out a warning, but the prince's defenses are still defeated. The Changeling retrieves his Flier, and makes good on his threat to the prince. The Watcher encounters the blinded prince on his way out of Roum and leads him to another city.
