Language: English - 1002 pages - - Marcel Duchamp was a controversial and influential figure in 20th-century art. He achieved early notoriety with the painting "Nude Descending a Staircase", exhibited at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. He questioned the concept of "the work of art" and even the validity of art itself. Originally published in 1969, this book, containing four new chapters, is a revised edition of a survey of Duchamp's work, life and ideas. The text examines his artistic experimentation and his constant search for new expressive possibilities, and includes an analysis of his masterpiece "The Large Glass". Illustrated appendices provide a catalogue raisonne of all known works - including 253 that have recently been discovered - and a bibliography of his writings, lectures, translations and interviews. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

"To be a painter for the sake of being a painter was never the ultimate aim of my life. That's why I tried to go into different forms of activity -- purely optical things and kineticism". When Gabrielle Buffet discovered Duchamp's Rotoreliefs, she emphasized this point further: "Duchamp's aim was to primarily to modify all plastic matter, to reject once and for all from his working arsenal all the traditional tools and equipment (tubes of paint, canvas, and brushes); to obtain the effect by mechanical means instead of through the expression of personal dynamism inherent in a particular individuality; to substitute technical value for expressive value".
Originally published as a hardback edition in 1969, and out of print since the Seventies, The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp has finally been recreated in paperback and is available at a fraction of the original cost. Duchamp is one of the most fascinating, influential and controversial figures in the history of modern art. From his first moment of fame in 1913, when Nude Descending a Staircase became the sensation of the Armory Show in New York, he has remained a vital and liberating force. Duchamp's work, which began by deriding the pretensions of academic art, developed into an attempt to bridge art and life. This edition is the culmination of more than 35 years of reseach by Arturo Schwartz, and catalogues both the artist's enigmatic life and every artwork he produced, with spectacular plates, an extensive bibliography and an exhibition history.
