Among his intellectual disciples were Josef Pieper, Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI), and Jorge Mario Bergoglio (later Pope Francis). In the 1980s Bergoglio began work on a doctoral dissertation on Guardini, though he never completed it.
