Synopsis

Paul Samuelson's textbook is used in introductory economics courses all over the world, and this monumental critique analyzes Samuelson's arguments step-by-step and shows the degree to which they have led to disastrous misconceptions. The first section of Anti-Samuelson, Vol. II deals with money and credit as well as with state intervention on the basis of these instruments. Since these topics presuppose many mediating links which Samuelson does not present, it is necessary to develop a theoretical understanding of money. The second part of Linder's study discusses what in earlier times would have been classified under the rubric theory of value. The presentation therefore focuses on the material and theoretical causes of this transformation and leads to an immanent critique of the theories of utility and supply. Special attention is paid to the degree to which the latter may be considered realistic. The third section deals with the general theory of production and the special theories on the incomes of each factor of production. Linder's critique here follows a rather straightforward approach: an immanent critique is combined with historical and empirical explanatory and/or illustrative material. The fourth and final part of Anti-Samuelson, Vol. II deals with the international aspects of the capitalist mode of production: international monetary system, world trade, foreign investment and the specific crises engendered on the world market. Given the key role played by these international capital relations - especially manifest during the post-World War II period - Samuelson's treatment proves rather disappointing - even within his own framework. For this reason Linder has supplemented his theoretical critique with a very broad introduction to the manifold functions of the capitalist world market.
