Synopsis
An archaeological study of ancient settlement patterns in Peru's rugged and diverse central highlands. The data derive from occupations between 500 B.C. and the mid-16th century A.D. Introductory chapters cover methodology, environmental context, ethnographic analogies for agriculture and pastoralism, and ethnohistory. Substantive chapters consider long-term trends in population, land use, settlement configuration, public architecture, and polity and economy at the local and regional levels. Two appendices provide detailed site and ceramic descriptions, including over 400 photos.
