Synopsis
We have long taken for granted that teachers and children speak with one another but, until recently, relatively little effort has been directed at understanding precisely what takes place during this exchange. This book represents an effort to highlight some of the intricacy and power of dialogue. When dialogue is moving effectively, both teacher and child learn from each other and benefit from the exchange. When it is not moving effectively, the interchange is one of pain and frustration for both. For the teacher, it means failure in their assigned task of enhancing the child's development, For the child, it means not only the torment of confusion and failure, but also a lost opportunity to profit from the material which the teacher has so carefully planned and organized.
