Paperback. Condition: Very good. First edition. The simultaneous paperback release. Edward O. Wilson's personal copy, not signed, but with his stamp to the outer face of the text block, of this famous law essay that was a "rallying point for the burgeoning environmental movement." The essay was published in the Southern California Law Review in 1972 and published here in book form two years later along with the Supreme Court's related opinions in the 1972 Mineral King-Disney-Sierra Club suit ("Sierra Club v. Morton), in which Chief Justice William O. Douglas cited Stone's essay in his dissent, arguing that Mineral King Valley and thus all of the natural world should have legal standing. With a foreword by Garrett Hardin. The book was reissued on its 35th anniversary by Oxford University Press. A very good book in wraps with a little bumping/creasing to corners, namely to the front wrap right at the spine, and light rubbing. A nice association copy in light of Wilson's own essential advocacy for the conservation and centrality of the natural world. "In this book, Professor Stone traces the development of the idea of legal rights, reminding us that children, old people, women, aliens, and 'minorities' have been treated as without rights in many societies throughout human history. Although each new movement to confer rights on some new 'entity' may have seemed 'odd or frightening or laughable' at the time, Stone points out that legal rights have been extended and previously rightless people (and things) have come to be recognized and valued for themselves. he then develops his thesis and proposal that we give legal rights to 'natural objects' in the environment--and to the natural environment as a whole.".
