In the late 20's and early 30's there was an influx of Russisn-born Jewish people to Peru. They were young people from the small towns lining the frontiers of Russia and Roumania. These young people all had their reasons for leaving, be it the hard times in the old country, or the stories of opportunities in the New World, or their own sense of adventure. They found themselves in towns as small as the ones they left and in the company of people as poor as themselves. The stories told of these arrivals would be sad if they were not filled with the irrepressible sense of humour and good-natured tolerance of their group. The immigrant never loses his traditional ways, but he does assimilate the new, and so manages to create something unique which lives as he lives and then is gone. The recipes (and sketches) in this book are an attempt at recording one such moment in his history that happens to taste awfully good.
