We also hear how the company would survive, often enduring hunger and bad weather by honing their survivalist techniques and skills at camping.

In all, this memoir oozes authenticity, the narrative ranking among the most impressive of all the rocky mountain men.

This edition includes several supplementary articles, written in the local press after this autobiography was first published in 1845. From these we gain an idea of how Americans of the era read and appreciated the insight wilderness explorers such as Ferris gave to those who were unfamiliar with the vast, untrammeled lands stretching across great swathes of the North American continent.
