Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket. First Edition. Some rubbing at edges. Signed on copyright page "Bill Malone Hubbells T.P. Trader MGR". Scarce thus. A classic study that traces the history and evolution of the Navajo rug, with a specific focus on the vital role of trading posts in shaping regional styles and the lives of the Navajo people. The book explores the complete story of Navajo weaving, from its origins and the traditional methods used by the Navajo people, to its development into a significant art form and commercial product. A central theme is how various trading posts across the Navajo Reservation influenced the regionalization of rug designs. The traders, such as J.B. Moore and Fred Harvey Company, encouraged specific styles and introduced new materials and markets, leading to the development of distinct, recognizable regional patterns like the famed Ganado reds. Bill Malone (1939-2025) was a Founding Father of Friends of Hubbell and One of the Last Authentic Indian Traders. For nearly 65 years, Billy served and traded with the Southwest Native American community, both on the Navajo and Hopi Reservations. Billy maintained the ways of the old traders at the crown jewel of Navajo trading posts. He served as the trader at Hubbell for 24 years. In recognition of Billy?s and Minnie?s lifetime of contributions to the Native American community, The Billy and Minnie Malone Scholarship in was named in their honor. A unique association copy.
