A balanced, but piercing analysis of the nuclear freeze movement, Garfinkle's book traces the origins and institutional development of the freeze movement as well as the sources of opposition to it, shedding new light on its intellectual and historical roots in contemporary American politics. From its inception in 1979, through the passage of the freeze resolution by the House of Representatives in 1983, to its role in 1984 presidential election politics, the story of the freeze is woven into a chronicle of US foreign and defence policy. The highly emotional character of the freeze movement, the ethical and religious dimensions of the current debate, and the mobilization of professional groups for and against the freeze are treated in depth. Readers across the political spectrum may find this volume a valuable guide to one of the most controversial issues of present time.
Garfinkle holds a Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania.

The Nuclear Freeze campaign was a mass movement in the United States during the 1980s intended to place political pressure on the United States and the Soviet Union to mutually freeze the testing, production, and deployment of nuclear weapons. The movement is based on a memorandum titled "Call to Halt the Nuclear Arms Race," and it quickly gained grassroots support. The movement went on to have limited national success despite criticism from many, including President Ronald Reagan, but ultimately lost momentum due to various proposals put forth by Reagan.
