This book is from H. E. Manville’s library. Harry Manville worked for the US Diplomatic service. His collection was dedicated to the Coinage of the British Isles. In the late 1970’s he found himself based in Washington and he retired in early 1980. In mid-1970s he wrote the Encyclopaedia of British Numismatics. From 1986 through to 2014, five volumes were published. He had one of the most remarkable numismatic libraries dedicated to the coinages of England, Scotland, Ireland and UK. Douglas Saville decided to sell this collection. Some items are highly values in monetary terms, but others fell within the budgets of even the most modest of individuals and are not only highly interesting, but are also rarely offered. Some 30 buyers, including institutions as well as private individuals, have purchased books from the library, Ancient Art is one of them.

hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. First Edition. First Edition. This is from the dustwrapper: "This book is published as part of the official programme of the Bank of England to commemorate the Tercentenary of its foundation in 1694. Unique access was allowed to a wealth of hitherto unavailable material in the Banks Archive, relative to design, production, numbering, forgery, lost and damaged notes. The Banks priceless Museum collections, too, have been drawn on fully in the selection of the many illustrations in colour and black and white. The text follows a broadly chronological path along which the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street is seen to be forever striving to produce the ultimate medium of currency: the inimitable note. The story begins with issues in 1694 under the first Governor, Sir John Houblon, and ends fittingly with the £50 note in Series E which features Sir John on the reverse, thus completing the 300 year cycle of the Bank's "prormise to pay"." Blue cloth with silver lettering, decorated endpapers, well illustrated throughout in colour and black and white. 245 pages, 9 X 11 inches. Near fine book in a near fine dustwrapper.
