Synopsis
This biography of Julius Caesar sets the man in his period. It covers his life from the early days in Rome, dominated by Sulla, Pompey and Crassus, through his campaigns in Europe, Asia and Africa, to his final years as dictator. It is not, however, just a narrative of events. The author throw light on Caesar's apparently conflicting characteristics. A man of great learning, taste and personal charm, a gifted writer, he was also an astute politician, masterly propagandist and showman, clever administrator and military genius. His career, a strange mixture of cruelty and clemency, is the turning point between the Roman Republic and the empire. Through Caesar the empire became continental as well as Mediterranean.
